Arizona is a wonderful
state. Moving to Arizona can be an
exciting move for anyone. Arizona became the 48th state when it
entered the union on Feb. 14, 1912. It was once primarily a mining
and agricultural area but after 1950 the state developed a diversified
economy and has become an important producer of high-technology
items, notably in the Phoenix area. It is believed that the
name Arizona means “place of the small
spring.” Arizona is called the Grand Canyon State.
Arizona is the sixth
largest state in the U.S. with an area of 113,998 sq mi. It encompasses
terrain that ranges in elevation from 70 ft. to 4100 ft. The federal
government owns about 46% of Arizona’s land area making the
state’s recreational areas plentiful. The three geographic
regions are the Sonoran Desert in the SW, the Colorado Plateau,
in the N, and the Mexican Highland in the central and SE parts of
the state. Because of the variety of Arizona’s topography
the average annual temperature and precipitation vary widely.
According to the 2000
census, Arizona had 5,130,632 inhabitants, an increase of over 40%
since 1990. During the 1990’s Arizona was the second fastest
growing state in the U.S. The state’s largest cities are Phoenix,
the capital, Tucson, Mesa, Glendale and Scottsdale.
Arizona has a comprehensive
statewide educational system. The first public school in Arizona
was established in 1864. Spanish missionaries established schools
earlier but they were not considered part of the Arizona public
school system. By the late 1990’s there were 624,000 pupils
enrolled in Kindergarten through eighth grade and 229,000 students
enrolled in grades 9-12. In addition, there are approximately 45,000
students attending private schools in Arizona. Arizona is also home
to several institutions
of higher education including Arizona State University, Northern
Arizona University and the University of Arizona.

There are many wonderful
recreational opportunities in Arizona. There is, of course,
the Grand Canyon,
Canyon de Cheylles, the Petrified Forest, Saguaro National Park
(the home of the giant saguaro cacti), and London Bridge, transported
from England. There are many Indian National Monuments also. Arizona’s
mountains, parks, rivers, and lakes provide ideal conditions for
hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating, swimming, skiing, and
horseback riding. Glen Canyon and Lake Mead National Recreation
areas are among Arizona’s favorite outdoor spots.
Professional sports
teams in the state include the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team,
the Phoenix Suns basketball team, the Arizona
Cardinals football team and the Phoenix
