California entered the Union on Sept. 9, 1850, as the 31st state.
Agriculture and mining have always been important aspects of California’s
economy as is industry, manufacturing, technological companies and
the state also ranked among the national leaders in service industries.
It has always been a popular tourist destination. California is
known as the Golden State.
California, with an
area of 163,696 sq mi, is the third largest state in making the
state’s recreational areas plentiful. California has a great
complexity of relief, with elevations from 282 ft below sea level
in Death Valley (the lowest point on the continent) to 14,494 ft
atop Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the conterminous states. California’s
coastline extends 840 miles!
Although California’s
climate varies widely, it is essentially subtropical. In almost
all areas precipitation is concentrated in the winter months. The
Pacific coast enjoys mild winters and relatively cool summers while
the mountain areas have colder winters and snowfall.
According to the 2000
census, California had 33,871,648 inhabitants. It was the most populous
state in the U.S. The state has a great diversity of ethnic and
racial groups. The largest cities in the state are Los Angeles,
San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Long Beach, Fresno, Sacramento,
the capital, and Oakland.
California is well
known for its progressive attitude toward education and it prestigious
academic institutions. Free state schools were established in California
in 1866. In the late 1990’s, enrollment in California public
schools included 4,337,000 pupils in kindergarten through eighth
grade and some 1,702,000 students in grades 9-12. In addition, more
than 600,000 students attended private schools. In the same period
California had nearly 400 degree-granting institutions of higher
education. Combined enrollment of all institutions
of higher education in the state was 1,971,000 students. It
boasts the 23 campus CSU system, the nine campus UC system along
with Stanford U, USC and numerous others.

California contains
numerous cultural institutions of the very highest quality. There
is the Los Angeles County museum
of Art, The Museum of Contemporary
Art, J. Paul Getty Museum,
the Getty Center, the
Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the
Hearst collection and many others. There is a Natural History
Museum in LA County, SF Museum
of Modern Art, the Richard Nixon Library, the Ronald Reagan
Library, the California State
Library and many large research libraries. There are many others,
too numerous to mention. Each of California’s largest cities
boasts an opera company, a ballet company or symphony orchestra.
There are many historical sites in California including all the
famous California Missions.
Recreation in the
state is more than plentiful. Lakes, rivers, mountains, beaches,
and forests offer a myriad of choices. More than one-fourth of the
total land area is in the national and state park systems. California
is home to the San Diego Zoo,
Sea World, Universal
Studios, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and Six
Flags Magic Mountain. Entertainment for the whole family!
Sports teams are also
numerous. Footballs fans have the
SF 49ers, the Oakland Raiders, and the San
Diego Chargers. Basketball offers the LA
Lakers, the Sacramento Kings,
and the LA Clippers. We have the San Jose Sharks for hockey and
the SF Giants and the Oakland A’s offer baseball entertainment.
I am sure there are some I am forgetting. There are plenty of teams
to entertain the avid sports fans, though.
Tourism
is a major industry in California. In the early 2000s, nearly
300 million domestic and international travelers visited the state
each year. This generates more than $75 billion annually and provided
more than 1 million jobs.
