It is the 8th largest state consisting of 104,094 sq mi including
376 sq mi of inland water. The highest point in Colorado is Mt.
Elbert at 14,433 ft. 36.4% of Colorado’s land mass is owned
by the federal government making the states recreational area’s
plentiful.
The Rocky Mountains occupy the central two-fifths of the state with
the Colorado Plateau making up one-fifth. Colorado is the highest
state in the nation. The Colorado climate is the highland continental
climate with colder winters and hot summers. The sun shines on an
average of 300 days a year. There are major rivers and lakes, ski
resorts, and a stunning array of wildflowers gracing the state
of Colorado.
Colorado’s ten largest cities are Denver, Colorado Springs,
Aurora, Lakewood, Fort Collins, Arvada, Pueblo, Westminster, Boulder,
and Thornton. Many of these cities are suburbs of Denver.
As of 2000, the state public school system consisted of 956 elementary
schools, 278 middle and junior high schools and 306 senior high
schools. There are many private schools in the state, also. There
are 70 degree granting institutions of higher education including
the University of Colorado, Boulder (which boasts the Front Range

There are cultural institutions such as the Denver
Art Museum, the Denver Museum
of Natural History, The Colorado History Museum and many others.
There are numerous Colorado historical sites and the state offers
ideal conditions for outdoor recreation. Colorado
tourism is a major economy. Travelers spent some $7 billion
in the state in 2000. Skiing in Colorado in mountain communities
such as Aspen, Vail and Steamboat Springs is a popular pastime as
is hiking in the Rockies, and State
and National parks such as Rocky Mountain NP, Mesa Verde NP,
and many others. Colorado also boasts four professional sports team.

Avalanche, the Colorado Rockies,
and the Denver Nuggets.
Colorado has an excellent
transportation system consisting of highways, trains, buses and
airports, Denver International Airport being the largest of the
airports. The inner city bus systems are some of the best in the
country.
